Online panels are a powerful tool, but they don't reach everyone. Older respondents, those with lower digital literacy, and people in certain communities are consistently underrepresented in web-only research. Postal surveys — used on their own or as part of a mixed-mode design — can fill that gap, and in some contexts they outperform online methods on the metrics that matter most.
We've been running postal and postal-to-web studies for public sector and academic clients for many years, and we know what it takes to make them work.
In the right context, a well-designed postal or mixed-mode study can outperform both online panels and face-to-face interviewing on response rate, cost, and representativeness.
The case for postal research
A major academic study published in 2025 compared face-to-face interviewing with a sequential web-then-paper self-completion design on the European Social Survey in Great Britain. The self-completion approach — which combined an online questionnaire with a paper fallback sent to non-respondents — achieved a response rate of 38%, compared to 22% for face-to-face, while also being considerably faster and at around one sixth of the cost per interview.
Representativeness was broadly comparable between the two methods, and on some measures the self-completion approach actually performed better — particularly in reaching younger respondents and people in urban areas where face-to-face fieldwork is increasingly difficult. Opinion42 was involved in the design and implementation of this study.
What we offer
Postal-to-web recruitment
We manage the full mailing process — sample management, letter design and despatch, web survey hosting, reminder sequences, and data delivery. For clients with their own contact databases, we can run the entire process in-house.
Paper questionnaires
For audiences where web completion isn't practical or appropriate, we can design, print, and manage paper questionnaires, with data entry and processing handled by us.
Mixed-mode studies
We can design studies that combine postal, web, and face-to-face elements — giving you the coverage and representativeness benefits of each mode while managing the complexities of multi-mode data collection.
Incentive management
Unconditional cash or voucher incentives make a material difference to response rates in postal research. We handle incentive fulfilment through our print and despatch partner.
Who this is for
Postal and mixed-mode research works particularly well for public sector clients, academic institutions, and community research where representativeness matters and hard-to-reach groups can't be excluded. It's also increasingly relevant for agencies whose clients are questioning the cost and declining response rates of traditional face-to-face fieldwork.
