Our political polling operation has given us a solid understanding of the methods required to achieve the quality of an interviewer-led offline project through panel research – while panel samples by their very nature cannot be as random as CATI or CAPI, intelligent use of quotas and weights can produce well balanced representations of the target population.
Any market research methodology has its quality control requirements; when projects are interviewer led, a combination of back-checking and analysis of the raw data will pick up the vast majority of issues, most of which tend to be down to misunderstandings rather than malice. With online research, data problems tend to stem from poor questionnaire design, formatting / layout, and in the case of online panels, some people not being interested in the subject matter and simply motivated by the incentive on offer. A careful review of the data can pick up most of these “rogue” respondents and of course one great advantage of online research is that any bad data can be replaced very quickly, often on the same day it’s uncovered.
